Meet the 2022 Gold Star Marching Band Officer Team!

Sophia Strand

Band President
Drum Major

Drumline Player
From Paynesville, MN
Instrumental Music Ed Major
4th Year in GSMB

Howdy! My name is Sophia Strand, and I am a senior majoring in Instrumental Music Education! I am involved in many ensembles like Wind Symphony, Percussing Ensemble, Marching Band, and I have also been in the Jazz Lab Band, University Chamber Singers, and Winter Drumline. I am currently involved in the Challey School of Music Student Council, Cru, and the Ultimate Frisbee Club Team as well. This is my fourth year in the band and second year as a Drum Major! I came from a tiny high school with no marching band, and now I can't imagine my life without it. Something I am most looking forward to is meeting all the new people and making instant friends. My favorite part about marching band is that it makes campus so small. I can't walk anywhere without seeing a green GSMB jacket or greeting a fellow marching band member in passing between classes or in the dining center. I am very excited and determined to step into the role of President well and to do my best to serve the band that has given me so much. GO BISON!

Isaac Homuth

Band Vice President
Trumpet Section Leader

From Moorhead, MN
Instrumental Music Ed Major
4th Year in GSMB

Hi! My name is Isaac Homuth and I'm going into my 4th year in the Gold Star Marching Band. I am majoring in Instrumental Music Education. I grew up in the Fargo/Moorhead area and graduated from Moorhead High School where I was very involved with the music programs. At NDSU I have had the privilege to be involved with a variety of ensembles including serving as Vice President and principal trumpet in the Wind Symphony, split-lead and jazz chair in the Jazz Ensemble, 1st trumpet in the Gold Star Brass Quintet, NDSU Jazz Combo, Dirty Bison Brass Band, trumpet studio, pit orchestra, pep band, and of course the GSMB.

My life mainly revolves around music, but when not in the practice room, teaching lessons, or at a gig, I like to spend my free time with friends doing things of shared interest such as disc golf, watching Star Wars, playing video games, and trying lots of new foods!

Benjamin Joy

Band Treasurer
Clarinet Section Leader

From Rochester, MN
Industrial Engineering Major
5th Year in GSMB

Howdy! I'm Benjamin Joy and I'll be your GSMB treasurer for this year as well as one of your clarinet section leaders. I am originally from Portsmouth, England, then moved to Rochester, MN when I was 6. In high school, I was in swimming and board game club. This will be my 8th year in a marching band. I am an Industrial Engineering and Management Major with a business logistics minor. My hobbies include snowboarding, golfing, long-boarding, and 3D printing. I'm a coffee addict which led me to be shift manager at Caribou Coffee. A fun fact about me is I know way too many fun facts. I like to listen to every kind of music except country. I have a lot of connections in the college of engineering so feel free to reach out to me for that as well as any questions about the GSMB. Looking forward to a great season!

Camden Loth

Band Secretary
Tenor Saxophone Section Leader

From Elk River, MN
Instrumental Music Ed Major
5th Year in GSMB

Camden Loth is the current Secretary of the Gold Star Marching Band and is a Senior pursuing a Bachelor's Degree of Music in Instrumental Music Education with a focus on the Clarinet at North Dakota State University. In addition to Clarinet, Camden performs on the Tenor Sax as a section leader in the GSMB. Hailing from Central Minnesota, Camden was initially going to come to the university in pursuit of an engineering degree, but many positive involvements in the music program led to a change of heart.

His passion for spreadsheets and taking notes in addition to music has guided him on to the Secretarial position that he now occupies. Camden also finds involvement with the local chapter of Tau Beta Sigma, a co-ed band service sorority that also has many ties with the GSMB.

When Camden isn't practicing his clarinet or one of several other instruments, you can find him either tinkering with and repairing the ones that don't work as well, or biking around campus and the rest of the Fargo-Moorhead area.

Maggie Beach

Band Public Relations Manager

Drumline Player
From Mandan, ND

This is Maggie's 5th year in the band. Being part of the drumline, she has had the opportunities to be part of multiple sections; front ensemble, cymbals, and snare. The last 3 years, she was named the front ensemble section leader. She is an Elementary Education and Human Development and Family Sciences major with a minor in Music. She has been involved in the Wind Symphony, Women's Choir, Percussion Ensemble, jazz bands, and Fargo-Moorhead Youth Choir through NDSU over the last three years.

Nate Thoms

Band Website Manager

Trumpet Player
From Maplewood, MN
Computer Science Major
4th Year in GSMB

Nate Thoms is from Maplewood, Minnesota. This will be his fourth year in the Gold Star Marching Band Trumpet section and his third as the Band Website Manager. He has played his trumpet since the 4th grade and has continued it all the way through college.

Nate never really marched in high school, except for a couple homecoming games and band trips. He graduated from Hill-Murray School in Maplewood, Minnesota and spent all four years in band.

Nate is a Computer Science major at NDSU. He has been involved with computers since he was 5 years old and his interest continues today as he has been involved before with the NDSU Association of Computing Machinery and the Cybersecurity Association.

He heavily enjoys the GSMB and has enjoyed learning how to march, as well as the community the GSMB provides.

You can find Nate usually in many places on campus; walking or biking around to class, hanging out in the Memorial Union being homework, or hanging out in the QBB.
